Liston reported that fourteen boats participated in the Venice Shark’s
Tooth Cup spinnaker, non-spinnaker and cruising fleets. Good weather and minimal waves for great
sailing in the Gulf.
- Rick
Gress reported on the May 12th Sarasota Bay Cup at Bird Key
YC. Three racing areas planned
covering Green Optis; bay pursuit race for spinnaker, non-spin and
cruising; and a gulf course for racer/cruiser and multi-hull. The target attendance is 100 boats. Activities similar to last year
including photos, complimentary beverages, Salsa band, and Seafood Buffet.
- Following
discussion about enhancements and upgrades of the SBC perpetual trophies,
it was agreed to postpone any action.
Also, Bob Willard volunteered to construct wood bases when we
decide to upgrade the trophies.
Current holders include: Hope & Glory, Charlie Clifton, Greg
Knighton, and Peter Wormwood, multi-hull?
- Mariella
Doyle reviewed the Key West Rendezvous. Nineteen boats have registered and

- Peter
Robinson announced that the WFPHRF annual meeting and BOTY awards is Saturday, June 23, 2007. The location is not finalized. If SYC is not available, then check with
Bird Key YC. He requested that Jim
Devine following the Key West Rendezvous send a copy of the SBYA BOTY
results to David Billings, WFPHRF administrator (address on the WFPHRF
website).
- Peter
recommended that SBYA standardize on the number of trophies awarded at
BOTY events as follows: 1 – 3 yachts, 1 trophy; 4 – 5 yachts, two
trophies; 6 – 7 yachts, three trophies; 8 – 10 yachts, four trophies.
- The
Cortez Yacht Club plans to host a Summer Solstice Weekend that they would
like to become a future BOTY season kick off race event. The June 2007 event will be a dry run with
the inaugural event in June 2008 and perhaps include a race from Davis Island.
Peter covered the USSailing basic Race Management to be
conducted on June 9, 2007
at the Florida Maritime
Museum, 4415
119th Street West, Cortez, FL
34215, 941-708-4935. The class begins at 8:00 AM and runs to 5:00 PM. The $30.00 fee includes lunch and course
materials and optional race management certification test. The instructor is Carol Bardes, USSailing
AREA D Race Officer. You may call
Peter to register. Motion
by Peter Robinson for SBYA pay the class registration for one attendee
from each of the member clubs. Passed.
The schedule of the 2007-2008 meeting dates (6:30 PM) is as follows:
- August 8, 2007 at
the Sarasota
Yacht Club
- November 8, 2007 at
the Sarasota Sailing
Squadron
- February 6, 2008 at
The Field Club
- May 7, 2008 at
the “location to be announced”.
Old Business
- Following
discussion, action on a Social Coordinator and/or committee was tabled.
- Cindy
discussed the Corinthian Fund, managed by the Sarasota Community
Foundation, with the purpose to assist local youth sailors who qualify to
attend national, PAN AM and Olympic racing events. Five youth Venice
sailors have requested financial assistance to attend the Mallory Cub in San
Diego, CA. To keep from depleting capital the group
will most likely receive an amount smaller than requested. Cindy then described a fund raising
effort that will hopefully raise a larger amount than what is raised by
local sailors contributing a $1.00 of their entry fees. She will be distributing information,
which, she hopes each SBYA member club will print in their new letters,
websites, etc.
New Business
There was a discussion about inviting the Sarasota Youth
Sailing Program to join SYBA. The
consensus was to invite SYSP, VYBA and any other local youth sailing programs
to attend the next meeting to determine if there is an interest and
benefit. The attendees would be the
adult sponsors associated with the youth sailing programs.
The floor was opened to nominations of candidates for
election to SBYA offices.
- Motion
by Peter Robinson to elect Cindy Clifton to the office of
Chairperson. Passed.
- Motion
by Cindy Clifton to elect Jim Liston to the office of Secretary. Passed.
- Motion
by Mariella Doyle to elect Vicken Kasparian to the office of
Treasurer. Passed.
The next Meeting of the BOD will be 6:30 PM, Wednesday
August 8, 2006 at the SYC.
Meeting Adjourned at 8:08 PM.
