Excel Spreadsheet Used for BOTY Scoring
The Excel Workbook contains multiple spreadsheets – a separate one for each Division – Spinnaker, Non-Spinnaker, True Cruising, Multi-Hull and Race Cruiser. The format of the spreadsheets is the same for all of them (see sample above) and is as follows:
          1)      On the left, there are three columns to enter the Boat Name, Owner/Skipper, and the Club.
          2)      A column “Best 4 Total” contains a calculated value that is the sum of the boat’s best four finishes (i.e., the four highest values in the “BOTY Points” of all the regattas.)
          3)      The column ”Regattas” is a calculated value showing the number of regattas in which the boat competed (“participated”).  This is used solely to determine the boats that qualify for the series; i.e., participate in 50% (rounded up) of the regattas raced.
          4)      Each spreadsheet also contains two columns for each regatta of the season series.  One column (Position) is for entering the finishing position for each boat in the regatta.  The second column contains the BOTY Points, and is a calculated value using the formula explained above.  It is a value that is greater than or equal to 1.000 and less than 2.000.
NOTE: The “Best 4 Total” never uses more than 4 scores, even if “Races” is more than 4.
Entering Regatta Information into the Scoring Spreadsheets
After entering the Boat Name, and if available, the Skipper/Owner and Club, the only other information to be entered is in the “Position” field.
1)      For each regatta, in the Position column, enter the total number of boats in the division in the cell immediately under the “Position” heading.  In the sample above, these values are in the green cells and are 5, 3, 4, and 5.
2)      Next, for each boat in the regatta, enter its finishing position in the Position column.
3)      If two (or more) boats are tied for the final regatta standings (for example, only one race and both boats have the same corrected time), they share the points for the tied positions.  In the sample above, see the two pink cells.  They are tied for second/third place. Adding 2 + 3 and dividing by 2, each boat gets 2.5 for its position.  The two boats they beat are in positions 4 and 5.
Notes:
·         When all boats finish the race, the last place boat always gets 1.000 for BOTY Points.  Since they didn’t beat any boats, they just get their participation point.
·         Since all participating boats are to get a full participation point, then any boat that is DNF, DNS, DNC, or is disqualified, should have a value equal to the number of boats in the division entered as its Position.  This gives the same result (1.000) as if they were in last place in a division where all boats finished.
